Chocolate-Orange Punch Bowl Cake

by Brenda

I recently found this recipe and loved it. I didn't have a glass bowl big enough for this, so unfortunately you can't see the layers. Here are the pictures I took. At the bottom is what it is supposed to look like.

1 box Devil's food cake mix
Water, Vegetable oil and eggs as cake mix calls for
4 cups milk
4 teaspoons grated orange peel
2 boxes (4-serving size each) vanilla instant pudding mix
1 cup chocolate syrup
2 cans (15 oz each) mandarin oranges
1 container (8 oz) frozen whipped topping, thawed
Heat oven to 350. Grease 9x13 pan. Make and bake cake mix as directed on box. Cool completely.
In a large bowl, combine milk and orange peel. With a wire whisk, beat pudding mix into milk until well blended.
Cut or tear cooled cake into 1 inch pieces. Arrange half of the cake pieces in a 3 1/2 quart glass serving bowl. Drizzle 1/2 cup chocolate syrup over the cake; spread half the pudding. Reserve 1/2 cup mandarin oranges for garnish; arrange remaining oranges over pudding. Add remaining cake pieces. Top with remaining chocolate syrup, remaining pudding then the whipped topping. Cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours until chilled. Garnish with reserved oranges.
For an added special touch, dip the reserved oranges into melted chocolate, place on waxed paper and refrigerate until chocolate is set (about 15 - 20 minutes).

This looked delicious. I made it today but I used strawberries instead of oranges. I even grated strawberries and mixed the juice in with the milk. It is currently setting up in the fridge, I will let you know how it turns out. I hope it is yummy!
